The 2022 Garden Walkabout
On Sunday 26th June we held our annual garden walkabout opening five gardens in Loom Lane, Letchmore Road and Homefield Road.

The gardens were all in fantastic condition thanks to the hard work of the owners and we had nearly 250 visitors who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

We served teas in one of the gardens in Loom Lane.
All income goes to the charities nominated by the owners and we will be sending £290 to both the RNLI and The British Heart Foundation and £870 to the Watford Hospice.

If you didn’t manage to join us why don’t you come next year when we hope to open gardens in The Avenue.

NEWS FLASH
Please note that booking for the trip to Lamport Hall on 4 August starts on Sunday, 3 July and not this Sunday, 26 June as noted in the Yearbook.
You can also book on 17 and 31 July.  The Store is not open on 26 June.

On 4 August the coach will leave the Old Post Office at 9.15am and return at about 5.00pm.  The cost per person is £37 which includes coffee/tea/biscuit on arrival and cream tea consisting of one large homemade scone, jam and cream in the afternoon.  Please bring your own sandwiches and drink as there are no facilities to buy food or drink at Lamport Hall.

The Hall contains outstanding furniture, books, china and paintings collected by the Isham family who lived there from 1560 to 1976. There will be a tour of the Hall.  The gardens have extensive herbaceous borders, a walled garden, exhibitions, a museum and a parish church.

OUR CHOICES CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Picture
Jane (right) gave away free samples of green alternatives at The Store at the end of May
Our gardens are filled with a wide variety of wildlife.  However the number of pollinators such as bees, ladybirds and butterflies and many bird species has declined rapidly in recent years.  As gardeners we can make a difference by following the example of Aldenham Parish Council who no longer use pesticides or herbicides on our public lands.

The Royal Horticultural Society advises their members and millions of other gardeners to avoid using pesticides and herbicides wherever possible and promote non-chemical means of control and provide  advice on alternatives.

The Radlett Horticultural Society would like to enable its members to garden sustainably by making available to try, these samples of alternative treatments which we plan to stock in the future.  Thank you for choosing a product that will not have damaging effects on our environment or ourselves.

We will be giving more advice on pesticide and herbicide free gardening on our website www.radletthortsoc.co.uk and Facebook page.

Horticultural soap with neem oil to spray on plants to control aphids, white and black fly.
Spray directly onto the insects.  This works by dissolving their waxy outer layer which is vital to stop them dehydrating. Horticultural soap is more gentle than household soap, which can burn plant leaves. Reapply at regular intervals until the population is controlled but remember our birds and pollinators need food to survive and consider where you can leave insect 'pests'  to help our wildlife.

Diatomaceous earth, for use controlling slugs and snails.
It is powdered silica and works by irritating the skin of the slug. It is harmless to worms.  Sprinkle around the plant to be protected. It will need to be reapplied after rain.

Garlic water to pour around plants to deter slugs and snails.
This will also need to be reapplied after rain.
Boil two whole garlic in 2 litres of water until soft. Liquidise the lot
Dilute 2 tablespoons to 5 litres of water
Spray on or around the plant. Stronger concentrations can be used

Crushed mint placed around ants' nests as a deterrent.
It is important to consider that gardening chemicals can harm beneficial insects, birds, the environment and our own health.  Can we learn to live with a little slug or insect damage, or sacrifice the odd lettuce plant to a fellow earth dweller?

Californian Poppies - Radlett allotments

A great Spring Plant Sale in the open air
Saturday 7 May 2022 at the Vision Hall, Christchurch, Watling Street, Radlett
Thanks to all of you for your great help whether setting up, dismantling, pricing, cashiering, supervising or growing (plants that is). All assistance greatly appreciated. And of course all you who bought the plants.

We took £436 cash, £665.53 credit card, and £44.60 on the door. Take away the cost of the bedding plants and we made £870.13 profit! Not a bad days work and we got a few new members into the bargain. Another wonderful Radlett Village Event. Then we sold £77.00 worth outside The Store the following day. Thanks too goes to the guides - for the cakes and teas and the books for sale stall.

email address?

Please help us to keep in touch with you by letting us have your email address - please email
membership@radletthortsoc.co.uk to be added to our mailing list.

Because of the current Coronavirus pandemic we have needed & may continue to make changes to our programme and facilities at short notice.  This has already included cancellation of some events & closure of The Store, and depending on the length of the social distancing requirements, we may need to do more.
With close to 600 household memberships and our low membership subscription rate, we cannot afford to do mailings by post, so without an email address we cannot keep you updated.

Any data you provide such as your email address is held securely and not shared with any other persons or companies.   We will only email you about events and facilities directly relating to the Radlett Horticultural Society, and will not send any advertising material.  Emails to members are sent using blind copy so no one else can see your information.
